# Set up Vox with Wispr Flow

> Recommended settings for using Vox as the microphone and trigger for Wispr Flow.

Wispr Flow handles the transcription, Vox provides the microphone and the button.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn off Vox dictation">
    Otherwise both tools transcribe at once. See
    [Use another dictation tool instead](/other-apps/external-dictation).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set Vox as Wispr Flow's microphone">
    In Wispr Flow, open Settings and set the input device to Vox. See
    [Use Vox as a microphone anywhere](/other-apps/virtual-mic).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Note Wispr Flow's activation key">
    Open Wispr Flow settings and set its dictation shortcut to one of your Vox buttons.
    Make sure **Use Vox in other apps** is enabled in Vox so the audio is routed to
    Wispr Flow.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Map a Vox button to it">
    In Vox, open **Buttons** and assign the Wispr Flow push-to-talk shortcut to a
    button gesture. See
    [Map shortcuts to your buttons](/using-vox/button-shortcuts).
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Vox buttons support **press**, **double press**, and **hold**. Map a press or double
  press to Wispr Flow's push-to-talk shortcut if it supports that gesture, or map the
  button's **hold** gesture to the shortcut Wispr Flow uses for push-to-talk.
</Warning>

## Recommended settings

| Setting               | Where               | Value                |
| --------------------- | ------------------- | -------------------- |
| Vox dictation         | Vox Settings        | Off                  |
| Vox button press | Vox Buttons tab | Wispr Flow's trigger |
| Input device | Wispr Flow Settings | Vox |
| Vox noise suppression | Vox Settings        | Not user-facing      |

Vox noise suppression is currently an internal experiment and is not available as a
user-facing setting. If it becomes available, avoid using it with external dictation
tools in general because it can hurt speech-to-text performance.
