# Turning on and pairing

> The black button: powering on and off, pairing, and switching between devices.

The black button is the one control on the device itself. It handles three things:
power, pairing, and switching between the devices you have paired.

<Info>
  These three actions are built into the device and cannot be reassigned. The white,
  red, and grey buttons are the configurable ones. See
  [Map shortcuts to your buttons](/using-vox/button-shortcuts).
</Info>

## Every gesture

| Gesture        | What it does                             |
| -------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| Hold 2 seconds | Turns Vox on, or off if it is already on |
| Hold 5 seconds | Enters pairing mode                      |
| Quick press | Switches to your next paired device |

## Turning it on

Hold the black button for 2 seconds. Vox vibrates to confirm.

If it has been paired to this device before, it reconnects on its own, usually within a
few seconds. The Vox app shows the connection state at the top of the window.

## Turning it off

Hold the black button for 2 seconds again.

Vox gives a confirmation vibration that is longer than the vibration used when turning
on. There is no documented idle auto-shutdown behavior here.

## Pairing a new device

You need this the first time you connect Vox to a Mac or iPhone, and again whenever you
add another one.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Hold the black button for 5 seconds">
    Two seconds turns it on, and holding for five in total puts it into pairing mode.
    If Vox is already on, hold for 5 seconds from there.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Vox in your device's Bluetooth settings">
    On Mac: System Settings, then Bluetooth. On iPhone: Settings, then Bluetooth.
    Keep Vox nearby.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the Vox app">
    Once connected, the app shows the device and you are done.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You can also start pairing from inside the app. On the paired devices list, **Add**
puts Vox into pairing mode without needing the button.

## Switching between paired devices

Vox remembers every device you pair with. A quick press of the black button moves to
the next one, so you can go from your Mac to your iPhone without unpairing anything.

The paired device list lives in the app. The current device is marked, and selecting
another row switches to it. Renaming and removing devices are in Settings.

<Note>
  Device switching needs recent firmware. If the app says so, update the firmware first.
</Note>

## Lights and vibrations

Keep Vox in front of you during setup so the buttons and lights are easy to see.
Vibration confirms the power gesture: a 2-second hold turns Vox on, and a longer
confirmation vibration accompanies powering it off. The lights and other vibrations
indicate the device's current state, such as pairing or connecting.

You do not need to memorize every light pattern. If you are unsure what Vox is doing,
check the connection state in the Vox app and follow the relevant pairing or switching
steps above.

## When nothing happens

    The battery is likely flat. Put it on the charger and try again.

    The time required before it will power on depends on the battery level; try again

  <Accordion title="It turns on but never connects">
    Make sure it is not still connected to another paired device. A quick press cycles
    to the next one. If it has never been paired to this Mac or iPhone, hold for 5
    seconds to enter pairing mode instead.

  <Accordion title="Bluetooth settings show it, but Vox does not">
    Pair through the Vox app rather than through system Bluetooth settings. Pairing
    only in system settings can leave the device connected but not usable by the app.
    Remove it there, then pair again from the app.
